Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfates—
the Body's Tools For Regenerating Cartilage
Natural Help for Arthritis without
Dangerous Side Effects
by Ron Schmid, N.D.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including
ibuprofen (Motrin and Advil), indomethacin (Indocin),
sulindac (Clinoril), and naproxen (Naproxyn), actually
increase the destruction of cartilage lining the ends
of the bones. In one study, physicians checked 186 patients
with hip x-rays. The 58 patients taking Indocin showed
more rapid hip deterioration than the group that took
nothing.
About 25% of people who take NSAIDs develop ulcers.
FDA statistics show that each year some 20,000 people
die from gastrointestinal complications. The primary
reason for blood transfusions in hospitals is because
of these complications. Acetaminophen does not have
these gastrointestinal side effects. But acetaminophen
overdose is the leading cause of hospitalization for
acute liver failure, and 10% of all kidney failures
are linked to acetaminophen. In the well-publicized
case of 37 year-old Antonio Benedi, ten Extra-Strength
Tylenol tablets taken over the course of four days resulted
in acute liver failure that led to a liver transplant.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfates, Studied in Over
300 Clinical Trials, Provide Natural Relief
- In one study, 80 patients with osteoarthritis of
the neck, joints, or lumbar spine were given either
1,500 mg of glucosamine sulfate or a placebo for 30
days. The glucosamine group experienced significant
improvement. Another study matched glucosamine with
Motrin. After eight weeks, the glucosamine group had
clearly experienced better results. Glucosamine exerts
a protective effect against joint degradation, and
enhances the synthesis of the substance that gives
the joint fluid its thick viscosity, providing natural
lubrication for the cartilage and membranes of the
joint.
- Like glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate is
also a component of cartilage, and it too has been
shown in numerous studies to produce better results
than NSAIDs in relieving the pain and inflammation
of arthritis. In one notable double-blind study, patients
suffering from osteoarthritis took from 800 to 1200
mg of chondroitin sulfate or a placebo daily. Cartilage
tissue samples in the group using the chondroitin
sulfate showed that damaged cartilage had been significantly
repaired after only three months.
Many people achieve best results using glucosamine
and chondroitin sulfates together. MSM has its own unique
anti-inflammatory properties and is of additional benefit
for many individuals. All Dr. Ron's products are 100%
